In the days before radio and television in Ireland, when the folk had finished their day's work, they gathered at the local pub for refreshment and entertainment. Some would bring their Celtic harps, others would bring a penny- whistle, or a squeeze-box, or a bodhron (drum), all of which were played for the enjoyment of all. They would play such music as the Celtic airs, reels, and jigs so folks could dance.
The Mountain Folk Harpers became a local chapter of the International Society of Folk Harpers and Craftsmen (ISFHC) in 1995. Howard Jackson was one of the founding members and is still a member of the group. The members come from all around Western North Carolina as well as the northwestern corner of South Carolina. We are an enthusiastic group who enjoy playing for others and spreading the joy of the Celtic harp.
